CBI starts NREGS scam probe

Bhubaneswar: A Little more than a week after the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe into the irregularities in the implementation of the MNREGS in Kalahandi,Bolangir,Nabrangpur,Koraput,Rayagada and Nuapada districts,a team headed by an SP from the agency’s economic offences wing in Delhi on Monday started its preliminary inquiry. The team held discussions with Panchayatiraj Department officials and sought details on NREGS implementation.

Monsoon session in July second week

New Delhi: The monsoon session of Parliament is likely to begin in the second week of July,sources said here on Monday. Though the monsoon session lasts around four weeks,this one may take a week more,in view of the shorter Budget session. The government plans lining up important Bills for the session,including the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill and the Lokpal Bill.

Land acquisition for Posco resumes

Bhubaneswar: After a two-day break,the Orissa government on Monday resumed the land acquisition process for the mega steel project of Posco in Jagatsinghpur district. On Friday,the land acquisition for the project faced roadblocks as villagers demanded higher compensation for their betel vines and permanent jobs for members of the displaced families.

Bhullar plea: Delhi govt to reply to SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Delhi government’s response on bomb blast accused and death row convict Devender Pal Singh Bhulllar’s plea for reducing his sentence to life term as his mercy petition before the President has not been decided for the past eight years.

Cong distances itself from Sathe comment

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday distanced itself from veteran leader Vasant Sathe’s suggestion that Priyanka Vadra should join active politics and the party should request her to do it. “Whatever she (Priyanka) has to do in her life is her personal decision and it should be left to her,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said at a press briefing here in response to queries.

Delhi HC stays CIC order

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the operation of an order by the Central Information Commission,asking the Supreme Court to explain the rationale of one of its rulings. Justice S Muralidhar stayed the order on a petition by the apex court registry. The registry had challenged the order,which had asked the apex court to explain the reasons of its findings while deciding a case.

Nine killed as boat capsizes in Ganga

Allahabad: Nine persons,including four of a family,were killed and two others were missing after a boat in which they were travelling capsized in Ganga river under Manda police station of Allahabad on Sunday night. Three persons have been rescued. The boat capsized in the powerful storm that lashed the entire area on Sunday evening. The search operations were still going on.
