Benegal could lose RS seat if put on Prasar Bharati board

A joint Parliamentary Committee has observed that film-maker Shyam Benegal could face disqualification from the Rajya Sabha had he become a member of the Prasar Bharati Board. The post amounted to an office of profit.

According to a report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Offices of Profit,tabled in Parliament on Thursday,Benegal,a nominated member of the Upper House,could attract disqualification under Article 102(1)(a) of the Constitution. The committee is headed by senior Samajwadi Party member Rewati Raman Singh.

A committee headed by Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari had recommended the name of Benegal for appointment as a part-time member of the Prasar Bharati Board.
