India,China and other developing nations have criticised the European Union for levying charges on international flights for greenhouse gases emitted by the planes while in Europe. The BASIC nations on Tuesday called the EUs move unilateral.
Talking tough on the issue of EUs Emission Trading Scheme during their 10th meeting on Climate Change here,Environment Ministers of the BASIC countries Brazil,South Africa,India and China said the measure on aviation sector violates international law including the principles and provisions of UNFCCC.
Ministers noted that the unilateral action in the name of climate change was taken despite strong international opposition and would seriously jeopardise international efforts to combat climate change, said a joint statement issued by the BASIC group at the conclusion of the meeting.
