The Election Commission observers in Arunachal Pradesh will stay put till the final vote is counted in the state on October 22. EC observers in Maharashtra and Haryana can get back to their respective states, but will have to report back on the counting day. EC sources said the Arunachal Pradesh arrangement was because of the difficult terrain in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen (retd) J J Singh said the final voter turnout in the state was 75 per cent,“which was a reflection of the patriotic character of the state”. There have been, however, instances of damaging of EVMs and other problems in 28 polling stations in the state. The EC may announce re-poll in those polling stations on October 19.

In Maharashtra, the EC has ordered re-poll in two polling stations — one each in Nagpur and Ichalkaranji. Adjourned polls in 22 polling stations — seven in Armori, two in Gadchiroli and 13 in Aheri Assembly constituencies will be held on Thursday.

The EC had a meeting with a Home Ministry official on Jharkhand elections on Wednesday. A joint secretary-level officer briefed the poll panel about “various templates and possibilities” for holding elections in the tribal state. The EC is learnt to have cited issues like the Naxal problem, forest cover, coal mafia, and above all,the coming National Games in the state,in its talks with the official. Home Ministry officials are now expected to discuss these issues with the state administration before they get back to the EC. The EC is scheduled to have a detailed, full fledged meeting with Home Ministry officials — that may include Union Home Secretary and other senior officials — on October 18 and October 19.
