Admitting that shortage of officers at junior levels was a problem,Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor on Thursday said that efforts were on provided extra officers to the National Security Guard (NSG).

On requirement of as many as 220 officers for the expansion of NSG in phase one,an issue which threatens to snowball into a controversy with the Army expressing its inability to spare more junior officers on deputation,the General that a solution was being worked out.

“We will see how best we can meet the requirements of both the Army as well as the NSG,” the he said on the sidelines of a function in the Capital.

As reported by this newspaper,the expansion of the NSG with the creation of four regional hubs has run into a roadblock with the Army officially informing the Defence Ministry that it was not in a position to provide additional officers for the specialised force.

The Army has no problems with sparing the 4,070 soldiers required for the expansion,but it has put its foot down on deputing more officers for the force.
