AMU Vice-Chancellor hit by car on campus,1 held

University spokesperson Rahat Abrar said a red Alto hit Shah and tried to push him to the side of the road

Vice-chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University,Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah,was injured when a car hit him as he cycled to work on Tuesday. The driver fled from the scene.

Shah had recently started to commute by bicycle within the campus to popularise cycling following the ban on motorcycles in boys hostels.

University spokesperson Rahat Abrar said a red Alto hit Shah and tried to push him to the side of the road in front of University Guest House No 2. The Vice-Chancellor was rushed to J N Medical College Hospital where it was found that his fourth and fifth ribs were fractured and his left knee badly bruised. AMU administration officials rushed to the hospital. Vice-Chancellors gunner Irfanuddin,who was only a few steps behind the V-C on another bicycle,lodged an FIR. The police have arrested a youth,Islam alias Sonu,who was allegedly driving the car.

Sansar Singh,CO Police Lines,said that Sonu had come from Debai to a hospital near the AMU campus for his sisters treatment. Sonu has told AMU proctorial board members that it was an accident and he did not hit VC deliberately.
