The user trial of nuclear capable Agni-II intermediate range ballistic missile was postponed till next week due to a technical snag in the missile.
The two-stage surface-to-surface missile which has already been deployed by the Army was to be tested by its Strategic Forces Command from Wheeler Island off the Bay of Bengal at 10 am on Monday. But we had to postpone the test due to technical problems, said Avinash Chander, director of the Agni missile programme. He said the test would be held sometime next week.
Apart from the technical snag, there were doubts over the missiles test-firing due to continous rainfall in Balasore for the last three days.
The missile, which can carry a nuclear warhead weighing one tonne, has been designed and developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory at Hyderabad.
Both stages of Agni-II are powered by solid propellants; it can be transported on rail tracks; it is 20 metres long, weighs 17 tonnes and can target places 2,500 km away.
The last test of an Agni-series missile,on December 10,ended in failure after the missile dropped into the sea a few seconds after its launch from Wheeler Island.
