Two days after the Rajasthan High Court stayed the implementation of a law granting quota to Gurjjars and economically backward communities in the state,Gurjjar leader Col (retd) Kirori Singh Bainsla met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and discussed the situation with him.

The HC stayed the quota on Monday on the basis of a petition filed by students of Rajasthan University, observing that it took the total reservations past the 50 per cent limit.

We met the CM today to discuss the issue and he has assured all help, Bainsla said. The HC stay is interim and legal counsel is being sought. Such things happen in a democracy and we are hopeful that the stay will be vacated as soon as possible. Bainsla added that the Gurjjar comm-unity respected the courts order and would abide by it.

A division bench of Rajasthan Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla and Justice M N Bhandari recently stayed the operation of the new reservation Bill and issued a notice to the state Chief Secretary, observing that the quota granted by it clearly exceeded the normal limit of 50 per cent laid down in the Indira Sawhney case of 1992 by the Supreme Court.

Concerns about whether this Bill would pass judicial scrutiny have been raised since the legislation was passed by the Vaundhara Raje government in July 2008,and after Rajasthan Governor S K Singh cleared it in July this year.
