The continuing suspension of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) threatens to trigger a headache in Scotland. IOA acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra has informed the organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow that given the current crisis in the association, and in view of the upcoming festival season,India would not be able to host the Delhi leg of the Queens Baton Relay on its scheduled dates.

CWG 2014 is scheduled to be held in Glasgow between July 23 and August 14 next year. In CWG tradition, the relay begins in the host city of the previous games before travelling to other Commonwealth nations.

Malhotra wrote to the Glasgow organisers last week asking for a rescheduling. As of now,the baton is scheduled to be in Delhi from October 11 to 13,and then travel to Bangladesh.

I have told the organisers that it is difficult for us to host the relay on the said dates. We understand it is against their tradition but we dont have an option. Dusshera will be around the corner so it will be difficult for us to provide security. They havent replied yet, the 81-year-old Malhotra said.
We can either get reforms in IOA or go back to status-quo: Abhinav Bindra
However, the main reason for postponing the event is that because of IOAs suspension,we havent got time to prepare at all. There are so many things to coordinate, but none of the IOA office bearers are available, Malhotra added.
The veteran BJP politician said the dates of the relay had been conveyed to IOA in July. Back then,we thought things would be sorted within the IOA but the situation has got more complex. The organisers told me to coordinate with the central and state governments but I alone cannot do that. Without a fully-functional IOA,it is difficult to host these events.
Malhotra added that his other worry was that if these issues were not resolved quickly,we will go on to miss many more deadlines related to next years CWG and Asian Games.
