In the first major militant attack in the Valley this year,a civilian was killed and six persons, including two policemen, were injured when militants launched a series of attacks in Sopore.

The police said Hizbul Mujahideen militants are responsible for the attacks.

This was a well-planned attack carried out by militants of Hizbul Mujahideen, said SP Sopore,Imtiyaz Hussain. Six militants were involved in the attacks. They were led by a local militant Javeed Ahmad Matoo.

Around 10.50 am,unidentified militants hurled a grenade at Sopore police station and then opened indiscriminate fire. No one was injured in the attack.

Minutes later,as reinforcement was sent, militants opened indiscriminate fire on policemen at the main chowk in Sopore less than a kilometre away. Four civilians and two policemen were wounded. An injured civilian, identified as 30-year-old Mehraj-ud-din Hajam of Sumbal, later succumbed to his injuries.

The police said this was followed by another attack when they were taking the injured to hospital. Militants lobbed a grenade outside the Sopore hospital, resulting in injuries to a civilian.

Police sources said the attacks were well thought out and the target was Sopores SP.
