NEW DELHI, AUGUST 11: Attorney general Soli Sorabjee today advocated an amendment to the Constitution for removal of corrupt judges without affecting the independence of the judiciary.
Delivering the Fifth Annual Prem Bhatia Memorial Lecture here, Sorabjee said the method of impeaching judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts as per the Constitutional provision was tardy and liable to get politicised. It should be changed with a “constitutional mechanism without affecting the independence of the judiciary,” he suggested.
Speaking on “Press freedom: Problems, Perils and Responses,” he said that in the existing system of the law of contempt, a peril which the press confronts, many media persons succumbed to self-censorship from exposing misconduct of some errant judges despite having unimpeachable evidence.
Sorabjee, however, said the judiciary had provided generous protection to the freedom of press and it was an abiding responsibility of the press to ensure that the image and authority of the institution was not damaged by baseless attacks on the judiciary.
Before begining the lecture, Chairman of the trust Justice R S Sarkaria conferred an award of Rs 1 lakh on The Hindu correspondent Amit Barua for Best Political Writing and journalist B G verghese gave scholarships to three journalists: PTI’s Deputy Chief Reporter K G Suresh, Hindi journalist Anjana Trivedi from Indore and Deccan Herald Sub-editor Nagesha from Bangalore for doing research work on media related subjects.
