With the West Bengal government under pressure, state Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, in a damage control exercise, on Saturday visited the family of Rizwanur Rehman three weeks after his death in mysterious circumstances and assured them of justice.
Bhattacharjee was greeted with black flags and posters demanding ‘justice’ and slogans like ‘Chief Minister Hai Hai’ and ‘Please Give Us Justice’.
Bhattacharjee, who had earlier wanted to meet Rizwanur’s mother, Kishwar Jahan, but was turned down, spent 40 minutes with her and other members of the family.
Bhattacharjee requested the family members to have faith on the CID and judicial probe.
“After the inquiry action will be taken against everybody found guilty including the police officers,” Rukbanur, the brother of Rizwanur said quoting Bhattacharjee.
Rizwanur’s mother who seem indisposed said, “he promised us justice.”
Asked whether she had confidence in Bhattacharjee, Kishwar replied, “We have some faith.”
Rukbanur, who talked to mediapersons after Bhattacharjee left, maintained that they were still demanding a CBI enquiry into his brother’s death.
The Muslim computer graphics teacher was found dead near railway tracks on September 21 following his marriage to Priyanka, daughter of businessman Ashok Todi on August 18.
Several posters were seen outside Rizwanur’s residence saying, ‘CM Why Are You Fighting With Us on CBI Enquiry In High Court’ and ‘Why? CM? Why has nobody been arrested yet’.
