AURANGABAD, MAY 3: Shortage of drinking water has provoked violent protest in at least two places on Tuesday even as the whole of Marathwada is fast coming in the grip of an acute drinking water shortage. The police had to resort to lathi charge in Gevrai tehsil in Beed district where a violent mob pelted stones at the municipal council office.
In the newly formed Hingoli district, agitated youth threw kerosene-filled bottles at the municipal council, when even after two hours of waiting under the scorching sun no one came out to accept their memorandum demanding regular supply of water.
In Gevrai, over 1000 youth participating in a spontaneous morcha, threw stones at the municipal council shouting slogans against the municipal chief, Jakera Begum. Just as the crowd tried to enter the municipal council building, SRPF personnel present at the spot latched the doors and main entrance to the building. But the crowd, was in no mood to leave and began pelting stones at the municipal chief’s cabin.
A 60-year-old man was injured in the lathi charge, police said, though eyewitnesses said the figure could be more. However, no one was reported to be serious, reports said. Erratic electricity supply, which affected water pumping to the filter station, has added to the already worsening situation of water supply in Aurangabad. Tankers had to be pressed into service in several areas, but they failed to meet the heavy demand.
