Mumbai, Jan 9: B S Waghela of Gujarat won the men’s individual championship at the 13th All-India Telecom Table Tennis Tournament which concluded today at Shahaji Raje Sports Complex.

In the final, he outclassed N Balachandra of Tamil Nadu 21-15, 23- 21, 21-11. In the women’s category, Geeta Purania of Madhya Pradesh lifted the singles trophy. In the final today, she beat Pushpalatha of Andhra Pradesh, 21-15, 21-11, 21-18. Balachandran and Geeta were declared the best male and female players of the four day tournament.

The men’s team championship went to Tamil Nadu while Madhya Pradesh triumphed in the women’s group.

Reebok signs up Jadeja

Chalke stuns Nimkar

Unseeded Dilip Chalke shocked top-seeded international Niranjan Nimkar 25-9, 25-11 in the third round of the first Maharashtra State Ranking carrom tournament at the Mukand Sports Club, Kalwe.

Chalke continued his winning streak by ousting Amit Oak 25-1, 25-16 to enter the fifth round.

Five goals by Subik Almeida were the highlight of St Blaise’s 6-2 rout of St Elias (Khar) in the boys’ under-14 Fr Donnelly Cup Schools hockey tournament at the Don Bosco ground, Matunga. Royston Rego was the other goal-getter. Rakesh Kadam and Vivek Kambli reduced the margin for St Elias.

Verma dazzles

Seven goals by Sandeep Verma was the highlight of Gokuldham School’s 15-0 victory over Arya Vidya Mandir (Bandra) in the 21st YMCA Junior College waterpolo tournament at the YMCA Agripada pool. Sameet Shah (4) and Arun Negi (4) were the other scorers for Gokuldham.

Immaculate B champs

Mary Immaculate B defeated their senior string 34-12 in the mini girls’ under-13 final of the Schools basketball tournament at the MSSA-Castrol Schools Sports Centre court, Azad Maidan.

Neha Deshpande (16), Reema Patel (6) and Sakshi Bami (6) top-scored for the winners. Disha Magdani (4) and Brunell Fernandes (4) shone for the losers.

Kevni prevail

Kevni prevailed 1-0 over Blazers in the HAM Rizvi Fourth Division League at the St Andrew’s ground, Bandra. The all-important goal was scored by Savio Kewskar.

Pro-Am Golf

Nine of the top ten Indian golfers, including Ali Sher, Gaurav Ghei, Mukesh Kumar, will be seen in the Seagram Blenders Pride Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the BPGC on January 13. Each of the professional forms a team of four with the other three being amateurs. The cash prize is Rs 30,000 with the winner getting Rs 10,000.

WCG athletics

The Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) three-day floodlit Open Athletic Meet will be held from January 14 to 16 at their sports promotion complex, off 2nd Hasnabad Road, near Khar-Santacruz subway.

Over 700 athletes will take part and prominent State-level athletes are Merwyn Fernandes, Dayanand Shetty, Dhirendra Kumar, Saba Karim and Arti Malekar.

Football tournament
