PUNE, Oct 1: A 36-year-old Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteer was killed when he came under the wheels of a State Transport bus after a Tata Sumo dashed his scooter at Shimla Office Chowk in Shivajinagar early on Thursday morning.Macchindra Bhikaji Ghodke from Joshi Aali in Shivajinagar was heading for ``Vijaya Dashami sanchalan'' of the RSS around 6.15 am when the incident took place.The RSS cancelled the ``Vijaya Dashami Sanchalan'' in Shivajinagar to mourn Ghodke's death. It was to start at the Bharat English School at 6.30 am. The sanchalans in other parts of the city went on as scheduled but were stated to be subdued.Ghodke and his neighbours Madhukar More, Sudhir More, Nitin More, Pyarelal Chaudhari, Ganesh Jadhav and Pavan Kanojiya had left their houses around 6 am.Within five minutes after that, they reached the Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School and garlanded the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. They were proceeding toward the Bharat English School located near the ST bus terminus at Shivajinagar when the mishap took place.Ghodke, who was ahead of his friends, was crossing the Ganeshkhind Road at the Shimla Office Chowk to reach the main gate of the school when a Tata Sumo (MH 14/G 4636) heading towards Sancheti Hospital from Agricultural College side dashed his scooter (MH 12/ 4631).The impact of the dash threw Ghodke's scooter 15 feet away. Ghodke was flung before the Rajgurunagar-bound bus and his head bashed against its front wheel. The Tata Sumo came to a halt after dashing against the ST bus, recalled Sandip More.Tata Sumo driver Uttareshwar Narayan Jadhav (25) of Thergaon has been arrested.Ghodke was a member of the rescue teams sent to Killari and Latur areas to assist rehabilitation of earthquake affected. He later adopted Lalit - a quake affected child. Earlier in 1989, he had participated in a rescue operation to help the flood affected people at Bhaje.
