CHENNAI, AUGUST 22: Kazakh’s renowned coach and Grandmaster, Evegeny Vladimirov with 6 points from seven rounds shot into sole lead when he outplayed young P Harikrishna in an ending at the close of the eight round of the Pentamedia Grandmaster chess tournament here on Tuesday.

Indian Grandmaster and National No 2 Krishnan Sasikiran (ONGC) (5.5/8) lost tamely to National champion and Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte (IOC) (4/7) to trail behind the outright leader.

Indian Bank International Master Guruswamy Balagumathan Prakash (5/8) played extremely well this time against Sandipan Chanda (2/7) inching towards his second GM norm. He now requires 3 points from his remaining 4 rounds.

With the infliction of defeats on both Sasi and Harikrishna, the Grandmaster from Kazakhstan, Vladimirov and IM GB Prakash are the only two players in the tournament to remain unbeaten as on date.

Bangladesh IM Reefat Bin Sattar (4/8) who suffered a setback against GB Prakash in the fifth round, suddenly became a giant killer when he accounted for Russian GM Alexander Fominyh in the sixth, Uzbekistan GM Saidali Yuldasheb in the seventh and the Indian GM Dibyendu Barua in today’s eighth.
