MAY 15 :The University Grants Commission (UGC) has raised the age limit for appointing visiting professors to 70 years with Rs 10 lakh being allocated as part of UGC’s quantum of support for the scheme during the Ninth Plan period till the year 2002.

The guidelines for the appointment of visiting professors/ visiting fellows which were revised for the Ninth Five Year Plan were circulated to 40-odd departments of the University of Pune. The earlier age limit was 60 years.

The UGC, which continued its support to the scheme of appointments of visiting professors and visiting fellows, also submitted that superannuated persons up to the age of 70 years be considered for appointment as visiting fellows.

However a professor should not be appointed a visiting professor in the same university in which he/she holds a post immediately before or after superannuation, the guidelines state while providing that the maximum tenure of appointment of visiting professor is two years.

A visiting professor is an eminent scholar his/her field and a person who has held the post of a professor or any other person who has achieved distinction outside the university sector is considered for appointment as visiting professor. The quantum of assistance for the operation of the scheme during the Ninth plan period, will correlate with the Ninth Plan allocation for the general development made to the university.
