CHANDIGARH, Oct 20: Vishwakarma Day was celebrated in the City with traditional gaiety and religious fervour today.
Many factories and shops were closed for the day, while many others offered "puja" and resumed work. Most of the roadside mechanics in Sectors 21 and 28 also offered prayers to Lord Vishwakarma- the divine engineer and master craftsman. They also worshipped their tools. Addressing the congregation at Ramgarhia Bhavan here, All India Ramgarhia Central Federation and Vishwakarma Maha Sabha’s president Gurcharan Singh Giani said, "the Ramgarhia community descends from Vishwakarma- the god of art and industry and it was through this community that multiple industry has been established and developed in the subcontinent".
"By dint of hard work and devoted labour, Ramgarhia Vishwakarmites, who number nearly 40 millions, are today well known for their craftsmanship," he added.
Chandigarh Mazdoor Sudhar Sabha President Ram Avtar, at a function held in Sector 32, asked the people to learn new courses by enrolling themselves in one of the various courses being run by the government. Paying obeisance to Lord Vishwakarma at a function organised by Jangid Brahman Sabha, Sabha President Balbir Singh Jangra called upon the people to follow the ideals of karam pratistha propagated by Lord Vishwakarma and achieve progress in the field of science and technology.
The day was also celebrated by PGI Engineering Technical Workers Association. PGI director B K Sharma appealed to the employees to follow the path shown by Lord Vishwakarma. Langar was also organised at various places to mark the occasion.
