
NEW DELHI, February 3: It was a day of upsets in the girls’ section as five seeds crashed out of the ITF Junior Circuit Under-18 tennis tournament at the DTA courts, here today.
Unseeded Pichaya Laosirichon of Thailand sent Ctvrtnickova Veronika packing in a hard fought battle 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. But she was later shunted out by India’s Trishna Williams in the second round 6-4, 6-3. Among the other seeds to crash out in the opening round were fifth seed Kanbargimath Tara, who lost to Australian Sohm Marion 2-6, 2-6, and No. 8 Radhika Madke, a victim of another Australian Juce Beatrice 4-6, 4-6.
The casualities continued in the second round too as second seed Velts Alisa went down tamely to Meusbaurger Yvonne 2-6, 5-7 and Pakistani Nida Waseem was sent packing by Radhika Tulpule 0-6, 0-6 Top seed Uzma Khan played a balanced game to advance to the quarter-finals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Shruti Dhawan. In the first set, Shruti went up 4-2 breaking Uzma in the sixth. But the top seed broke back inthe next and then had broke her again in the 11th to serve out the set.
In the second set, Uzma led 3-2 but Shruti levelled by breaking the top seed in the next. It was curtains for Shruti after that as Uzma took the next three games to close out the match.
Boys’ top seed Zaman Sanzaruz maintained top form while breezing past Sirotin Denis of Kyrgistan 6-1, 6-2. Wild card entrant Punna Vishal upset fourth-seed Rohan Bopanna 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. An aggressive game and perfect serve saw Vishal dominating the show and a break in the sixth game gave Vishal the first set.
