Meanwhile, the international hockey federation (FIH) has announced the nominations for the 2005 world Men’s Player of the Year awards. only V S Vinaya of India figures in the list. Also, for the year’s world men’s Young Player of the Year award, India’s drag-flick specialist Sandeep Singh gets a nomination.

The nominations

2005 World Men’s Player of the Year: Salman Akbar (Pak), Pol Amat (Esp), Teun de Nooijer (Hol), Jeroen Delmee (Hol), Jamie Dwyer (Aus), Santi Freixa (Esp), Brent Livermore (Aus), German Orozco (Arg), V S Vinaya (Ind), Christopher Zeller (Ger).

2005 World Men’s Young Player of the Year: Shakeel Abbasi (Pak), Robert van der Horst (Hol), Mark Knowles (Aus), Sandeep Singh (Ind), Lucas Villa (Arg).

Nominations were decided by a survey of international coaches, with Player of the Tournament voting and performances at events in 2005 also taken into consideration.

The award winners will be determined by a ballot of players and coaches from the six competing teams at the ongoing Sahara Champions Trophy. The awards will be presented at a function in Chennai on Saturday.
