MUMBAI, August 1: Vikrant Patwardhan and Asawari Patwardhan have been given the pride of place in the men8217;s and women8217;s singles sections, respectively, of the Greater Mumbai District badminton championship, sponsored by Castrol and jointly organised by the Cricket Club of India and Greater Mumbai Badminton Association from August 3 to 7.

Sixth seed Parag Terwadkar and Santosh Borkar jointly lead Group B after five rounds with five points in the Entrants Division Chess Tournament being conducted by the Bombay Chess Association at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Canteen. Vhatwar siblings Malti and Kuldeep and top seed Wakil Akhtar are in the second position with 4.5 points.

On the top board, Alam Parvez played the Ponzian8217;s opening. In the middlegame, he created a pawn weakness in the centre which Parag exploited. Alam lost two pawns in defence and resigned immediately after committing a rook blunder.

Vishal Shah, all of nine, made an unsound pawn sacrifice on the ninth move from the white side of SicilianDefence and lost tamely after 55 moves to Santosh Borkar.

Malti, with black pieces, faced the English opening and was lucky to win against Nilesh Dalvi, who blundered his rook on the 41st move and lost. Her brother Kuldeep played the Sicilian Alapin and defeated Rishikesh Trivedi in 60 moves.

Saini wins Award
City-based martial arts exponent Sensei Pradeep Saini has been awarded the 1998 Presidential Sports Award for Martial Arts.

The Award includes a citation from the President of The United States Bill Clinton along with a certificate appreciating his skill and contribution to society.

Sensei Saini is a sixth-dan black belt in Goju Ryu karate and first degree black belt in Taekwondo. He is also amongsthe highest ranked Indian instructors in the world. He has 72 gold medals to his credit including five National and seven State championships.

Saini has imparted training to the Army, Navy, Police and school children.

Judges8217; examination.
The State Gymnastics Association hasorganised a judges examination in artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and sports aerobics at the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers RCF Youth Council Hall, Chembur, Mumbai-74 from Aug 7-9.

Interested candidates should register with Mahendra Chemburkar, Member Technical Committee at Yamasita, D/34, Chembur Gaothan, Mumbai 71 Tel: 5286033 on or before Aug 3.

Dewan Squash Classic
The Dewan Housing Squash Classic will be conducted by the Professional Squash Association at the Otters Club, bandra from August 10 to 14. It will have a prize money of Rs 1,40,000. The events are the men8217;s, women8217;s, professionals and under-19. Each of the winner will earn Rs 7,500. Entries will be accepted till August 8 and should be faxed to PSA on 8525589 or send through the clubs.

Simultaneous chess International Master Sharad Tilak, IWM Bhagyashree Thipsay, Fide Master Avinash Awate and Parag Varde will play simultaneous chess on August 19 at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Canteen. More details can be had fromDB Pulekar at the venue.
