As State government seeks a retrial in the Best Bakery case, victims feel they can once again hope that justice will be served. But, a pall of gloom seems to hang over Hanuman Tekri, where all 21 accused live.
Heena, sister-in-law of chief witness and complainant Zaheera, says, ‘‘I am happy by this new development…After the fast track court acquitted the accused, I had decided to leave Vadodara. Now, I have changed my mind.’’
Adopting a more cautious approach with the media this time, she says there is little chance of the accused going unpunished as the whole case will be conducted by the apex court. Her neighbours also express hope that the Sheikh family will now get justice.
An altogether different atmosphere prevails at Hanuman Tekri. The house of accused Suresh Vasava, opposite Best Bakery, is locked while there is no sign of the accused and members of his family. They moved out after the HC issued bailable arrest warrant against the accused. Family members of the three accused — Tulsi Tadvi, Kamlesh Tadvi and Shailesh Tadvi — also claim to have no clue about the accused. But they plead that the three are innocent. The only victim available at home is Mahendra Jadav. Though disturbed by the news, Jadav tries to present a bold face, saying: ‘‘I am ready to face any punishment though I have said several times that I am innocent.’’
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha says Gujarat HC’s arrest warrant has not reached his office yet. ‘‘I will execute it and arrest the accused as soon as I receive the warrant.’’
