Demanding that the Kanchi Shankaracharya’s fresh formula for settlement of the Ayodhya issue be made public, VHP international general secretary Pravin Togadia today warned of a ‘‘big agitation that will change the course of country’s politics’’ if the disputed land was not handed over to Hindus ‘‘unconditionally’’ for construction of the Ram temple.
Taking objection to ‘‘secret parleys’’ to resolve the vexed issue, Togadia said any proposal that compromises on the ‘‘self-respect’’ of Hindus would not be acceptable ‘‘even over our dead bodies’’ and made it clear that the claims over Kashi and Mathura lands would continue to be on the VHP’s agenda.
‘‘Ayodhya is…a matter of faith for millions of Hindus,’’ he said at a press meet here. Rejecting the idea of building a mosque alongside the proposed temple at Ayodhya, he said: ‘‘If that is the case, let us first build a temple near Mecca Masjid. If it cannot be done, then there is no question of allowing construction of a mosque in Ayodhya.’’
He reiterated that the nation has a ‘‘right to know’’ details of the seer’s new formula sent to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board last week. Asked about the Kanchi seer’s remark that the solution to the dispute would be found by July 6, he said: ‘‘Any Shankaracharya should be confident. We are confident that a temple will be built at the birthplace of Lord Ram. History will prove it.’’
In Chennai, a top VHP source revealed that Parishad working president Ashok Singhal had called on the Kanchi Shankaracharya on Sunday night. However, neither the Mutt nor the police sources were willing to confirm the visit.
