I spluttered the order with practised insouciance, 8220;Cheese-in-a-bun, please.8221; The girl at the McDonald8217;s counter giggled. 8220;One hot apple pie and one large orange juice,8221; she reels off, completing the rest of my daily lunch selection. Smiling sheepishly, I gathered a few napkins and a straw, and settled the fare in a quiet corner.
It was a cold Atlanta morning when I had set out to scavenge the malls for vegetarian food. I wouldn8217;t have hazarded the same fare in the hotel I was staying in. Rumour had it that chicken broth was a favourite of the mysterious head-chef, who stalked the dank corridors of the restaurant kitchen.

Over the years, this trait becomes a reflex action. The other day I was in Singapore, my friends were eager to treat me at 8216;Komal Vilas8217;. This was reputedly the most hallowed vegetarian haunt of the local Indians in the bustle of Little India8217;s Serangoon Road. Within minutes, I was drooling at the plantain leaf laced with exotic rasam and sambar. The waiter ambled up to us, clad in traditional South Indian attire replete with a namaam on his broad forehead.
But I couldn8217;t help myself. Much to his consternation, I heard myself asking that usual question: 8220;Is it vegetarian?8221;
