MUMBAI, JAN 5: Varun Shipping are well placed against last year’s runners up Union Bank. After taking a big first innings lead of 259, did well to claim opener Ajit Kolte (40) in their second innings on the penultimate day of the three-day Times Shield B Division semi-final at Karnatak ground, Cross Maidan here on Wednesday.

In the other semi-final Mumbai Port Trust were 339 for eight, in reply to Bombay Suburban Electric Supply’s total of 172 at Police Gymkhana.

Brief scores: Union Bank 181 & 40-1 vs Varun Shipping 440 (Nikhil Dixit 37, Rohit Rane 96, Anant Tiwari 80, Dushyant Kadam 82, Ajay Joshi 36, Umesh Patwal 24 not out; Mandeep Khurana 3-58). BSES 171 vs Mumbai Port Trust 339-8 (Sanjay Jamsandekar 32, Shailesh Manjrekar 73, Naresh Kamble 57, Freddy Correia batting 32, Ashish Mahadeshwar batting 49; Ajit Golatkar 3-57, Jaideep Gharat 4-114).

Thakur, Salvi shine
RAHUL THAKUR (4-54) and Omkar Salvi (3-78) helped hosts Bombay Gymkhana to restrict PJ Hindu Gymkhana to 224 onthe day one of the two day Bichip u-22 Cricket Tournament at Azad Maidan here on Wednesday.

PJ Hindu Gymkhana were served well by opener Sachin Sawant (57: 8×4) and all-rounder Amit Tanawade (49: 7×4) after they elected to bat. At close, Bombay Gymkhana were 12 for no loss.

The other league match at fort Vijay ground, Azad Maidan was stopped after lunch due to to Taxi Union Morcha. The match will be continued on the second day.

Brief scores: PJ Hindu Gym 224 (Sachin Sawant 57, Amit Tanawade 49, Omprakash Tiwari 35; Rahul Thakur 4-54, Omkar Salvi 3-78) vs Bombay Gymkhana 12-0

NAMRATA GHAG fine spell (5-2-5-4) of medium-pace bowling helped St Columba to beat Rajhans Vidyalaya by eight wickets in the first round of the MSSA Colgate Girls Inter School Cricket Tournament (25 overs) at Azad Maidan on Wednesday.

Brief scores: Rajhans Vidyalaya 36 (Namrata Ghag 4-5, Anuja Devlekar 2-8) lost to St Columba 36-2 by eight wickets.
