With an eye on the Gujarat polls, the Congress leadership today set in motion the process of revamping its state team, showing the door to PCC chief Amar Singh Choudhary and CLP leader Naresh Rawal.
The duo were summoned by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and asked to resign, and they did without a murmur of protest. Choudhary has been at the receiving end for owing his failure to marshal troops during the riots. Rawal faced similar criticism.
Sonia’s game-plan on Gujarat, though, seems to have just begun. The decision on Choudhary’s successor is hanging fire despite a number of contenders being considered for the job.
Leading the pack is Shankar Singh Vaghela alternately described as outgoing, volatile and brash.
Right now, Vaghela may be the man of the hour; a Thakur, propelling him to the top job is likely to strengthen party’s hold over crucial vote-bank. But Vaghela’s RSS background ‘‘may not go well with the Muslims’’.
