Five talukas receive rain
Even as the sky remained overcast with clouds, only five of the 12 talukas recorded rainfall on Sunday. According to the local weather office, Jetpurpavi received 3 mm, Dabhoi and Chhotaudepur 1 mm each, Naswadi, 7 mm and Sinnor 6 mm rainfall.

Case of rioting
The Raopura police have registered a case of rioting under sections 147, 323, 324 of IPC and section 135 of the Bombay Police Act against five people for allegedly assaulting one Khurshidbanu Niyaz Mohammed Shaikh, a resident of P T College Compound. According to information, the woman8217;s son had recently divorced his wife, a mother of a one-and-half-month son, and she was living with her parents. Shaikh alleged that five men related to her daughter-in-law came to her house and demanded Rs 3 lakh for maintenance of the child on Saturday. They assaulted her with sharp-edged weapons when she refused to meet their demands. Investigations are on, the police said.

Memo submitted
The Vadodara City Recognised Private Primary Teachers8217; Association submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel and Education Minister Anandiben Patel demanding pay scales at par with their counterparts in government-run schools, bonus, leave travel concession and maternity leave for woman teachers. A statement said the election for new office-bearers of the association would be held at the Sardar Bhawan on July 25.

Planning award
Nisarg8217; residential complex, off Old Padra Road, built by Jayraj Builders has been given the award for best planning for 1998 by the Indian Institute of Architects, according to a statement issued here on Sunday. Sanjay Puri, the architect of the complex, received the award at the annual function of the Institute in Mumbai recently. The complex has a garden, a gymnasium, a health club and a swimming pool, among other facilities.

VCCC demand
The Vadodara City Care Committee has demanded that special steps be taken to prevent suicides at the Sursagar lake in separate letters to Municipal Commissioner Aloria and Police Chief Kuldip Sharma.Rehabilitated
The Society for Village Development in Petrochemicals area SVADES, a voluntary organisation working in the rural areas for promoting education, has rehabilitated 11 school drop-outs from Karodiya and six from Koyali village. According to society general secretary Nanak Bhatt, the organisation also conducts various programmes like tree plantation and runs mobile libraries.

Fee-hike
Surat: District Education Officer Punambhai Patel has stated that the government recognised private schools run by M T Society in Navapura has been allowed to raise monthly fees for students to Rs 155 with effect from June. The amount includes tuition fee, admission fee and term fees.
