Uttaranchal won’t host VIPs looking for a cool summer

VIPs will no longer be able to beat the scorching summer heat in the cooler climates of Uttaranchal hills this summer, all expenses paid. As part of its austerity drive, the state government has decided to drastically reduce the number of state guests who can enjoy their holidays free of cost.

The step has been taken in view of the large number of VIPs flocking to the tourist resorts of Mussoorie and Nainital etc in the state. Before Uttaranchal was formed, Uttar Pradesh was spending a sum of more than Rs 15 crore per season for the stay and upkeep of its guests in Garhwal and Kumaon hills. Almost the entire UP ministry, including Governors, used to frequent the hill resorts with families and friends. Besides, there were judges, senior bureaucrats from the Centre and other states who availed the state government’s hospitality. It was an all-expense paid tour where, besides free food, transport and boarding, they were allowed to make free STD calls.

After Uttaranchal’s formation, the same pressure continued last summer. Uttaranchal officials are tight-lipped about the exact amount being spent on the expenditure of its guests. In order to put an end to freebies, the state government has notified the categories of VIPs who would be able declared state guests and facilities will be provided to them.

The President, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the country would continue to avail state guests facilities. Other than them, no one would be allowed to use STD facilities free of cost. Other dignitaries have been divided into four categories and the number of days for which they can avail of these facilities have also been restricted.

The state’s ministers are allowed use of the guest houses. They have to pay nominal charges for their stay, while paying full charges for their meals. There will be no free STD facility for them.
