The police team caught Mohsin, Islam and Asghar from a house on Saturday night. When their family members resisted the arrest and raised an alarm, the police team allegedly started beating them up. Meanwhile, Noor Hasan, a neighbourer and carpenter by profession, also intervened.

It has been alleged that Hasan was hit by the policemen and later succumbed to injuries sustained in the process. This infuriated villagers who attacked the police party forcing it to flee. The villagers later staged a dharna while carrying the body of Hasan. Five legislators of the Bahujan Samaj Party—Shahzad, Haridass, Surender Rakesh, Qazi Nizamuddin and Yashvir—along with state party chief Surajmal also joined the dharna.

The villagers were pacified only when Hardwar Senior Superintendent of Police P Murugashan assured them that a complaint against Shanti Kumar, sub-inspector, two policemen and two Home Guard personnel would be filed. After post-mortem, Hasan’s body was buried late on Sunday night. Police officials said all the accused policemen had been missing after the incident and efforts were on to arrest them.
