ST ANDREWS SCOTLAND, OCT 7: Tiger Woods and Mark O8217;Meara give the United States a huge edge in this week8217;s one-million-pound 1.6 million Alfred Dunhill Cup team event.

Throw in John Daly and the inspiration he takes from the fabled old course where he had been so successful and the American trio may be invincible.

Woods, the record-breaking 1997 Masters champion, is the World number one and O8217;Meara is ranked fourth after his Master and British Open triumphs this year.

Daly is down at 126th but to dismiss him as a factor because of his ranking is to ignore his history at St Andrews.

He came here first in 1993 and won four of his five matches as the US captured the trophy then he returned for the 1995 British Open and won after a play-off against Costantino Rocca of Italy.

O8217;Meara, 41, is the most experienced of the team with appearances in the first three Dunhill Cups and the last two, and contributed to victory in 1996. Woods is having his first look at the course, no doubt lured by the factthat the Open here is less than two years away.

South Africa defend the title with the trio who won last year, led by World number three Ernie Els. He is supported again by countrymates Retief Goosen and David Frost.
