US Congressman names Sri Sri Ravi Shankar for Nobel

A Democrat, Crowley was formerly the co-chairman of the Congressional caucus on India and Indian Americans. In Congress, he represents the Seventh District of New York which has a sizeable Indian-American population.

The work of the Art of Living Foundation, Crowley said, was an example of communal conflict resolution, nourishment of the soul and the infinite possibilities of the human spirit which typifies the Nobel Peace Prize.

‘‘I am honored to forward his name to the judges in Oslo, Norway, to be considered for the prestigious prize,’’ he said in a statement.

Having recently had the opportunity to meet the guru, Crowley said Shanker’s message of compassion, inclusiveness, cooperation and peace of mind as the foundations of happiness and prosperity was one that resonated with people from all parts of the world.

The Nobel award is chosen in October and is presented in December. February 1 is the deadline for submission of nominees for the prize to the Nobel Committee.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is perhaps best known for the Sudershan Kriya—a breathing technique that eliminates stress. His programme of meditation is taught in over 140 countries and is practiced by millions of people world wide.
