THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Aug 1: The appearance of a photograph of Kayyur struggle memorial on the cover page of Kerala Calling, a Public Relations Department publication, created noisy scenes in the Assembly today with Chief Minister E K Nayanar asserting that Government publications would certainly reflect the views and aspirations of the party in power.
Congress Legislature Party deputy leader G Karthikeyan who raised the issue through a submission alleged that CPM was misusing the Government machinery for its political gains. He was referring to a cover picture of Kayyur struggle memorial on Kerala Calling. Amid CPM members’ noisy protest, Karthikeyan said that the Government money was being wasted for CPM propaganda.
Nayanar said that Karthikeyan’s ignorance about Independence struggle was an insult and ingratitude to the martyrs of freedom. It was betrayal of history.
He said he was helpless if the Congress members were not even properly informed about Independence struggle. Both the UnionGovernment and the State Government had approved Kayyur struggle as part of Independence struggle. The participants of that struggle had also been getting freedom fighters’ pension, he reminded the Opposition members. Only those who had made no contribution to the freedom struggle could find fault with the cover page photograph of Kayyur struggle memorial on Kerala Calling.
Kerala Calling being a Government publication would naturally reflect the views of the ruling LDF, he said. However, Opposition members protested against the way the chief minister responded to the Congress member’s submission. Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader T M Jacob wanted the Speaker to expunge certain remarks made by the chief minister from the records. Speaker M Vijayakumar said he would look into the issue.
