CALCUTTA, June 1: Brushing aside charges that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh was an act of political opportunism, party leader Sushma Swaraj yesterday claimed here that the BJP had told voters that the tie-up was an experiment which would be reviewed in case it didn’t work.

There was no attempt to hoodwink the State’s voters, she asserted at a press conference in the city.

The BJP spokesperson and general secretary also talked of the Women’s Bill, claiming that it was not her party but the Janata Dal which was trying to spike it. “We have no plans to oppose the Bill,” she said.

Swaraj played down BJP leader Uma Bharati’s reported differences with party members on the issue, saying: “We know about Umaji’s views, but let’s not forget that she also said that if the party issued a whip during vote, she would follow the partyline.” Anyway, Swaraj added, “I think there isn’t any controversy about it at all.”

Charging instead the United Front leaders with trying to scuttle the Bill, the BJP leader gave the example of Sharad Yadav, “who even threatened to quit on the issue.”

Swaraj also picked on the UF for its efforts to normalise relations with Pakistan, asserting: “Again, we are not opposed to the idea, but it should be done on equal terms, not the way UF is going about it.”

She didn’t give much of a chance to the UF Government, predicting it might collapse any day because of incessant intra-party squabbles and sharp differences between its supporting partners. “Even Bihar Chief Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav is quite capable of bringing down the Government,” Swaraj noted, adding it was not without reason that the BJP was getting ready for mid-term polls.

Swaraj, who arrived in the city from Port Blair, where she had joined L K Advani in paying homage to Veer Savarkar on May 28, also talked of the Swarna Jayanti Rath Yatra. If the Left Front tried to stop Advani’s rath in West Bengal, she warned, the BJP would be ready to take any action. On Mamata Banerjee’s chances of joining the BJP and floating a third front, Swaraj said: “Anybody is welcome in the party provided he agrees with the BJP ideology.” She also believed her party had a good chance in West Bengal.
