KARUR, April 4: The Central Government will not hesitate to impose President’s rule in Tamil Nadu if the DMK Government fails to curb militant activities and bomb culture, Union Law Minister M Thambithurai said here on Friday.

Speaking to newspersons, he said Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had said the BJP-led government would not indulge in toppling state governments for political reasons. He had said in Parliament that the Centre would not misuse Article 356 of the Constitution. But in case of total deterioration of law and order, infiltration by foreign elements and uncontrolled militant activities in any state, the government would not hesitate to take severe action against the state government concerned.

He said the DMK government was fully responsible for the recent blasts in the state as it had failed to take stringent action against growing terrorism.

The Minister said that the police system in Tamil Nadu should be revamped to enable police personnel to tackle terrorism in the state. Hesaid Tamil Nadu police were living in perpetual fear of their lives.

About the Intelligence network in the state, Thambithurai said the government should take immediate steps to modernise the network as it was essential for maintaining law and order. The government should implement welfare schemes for the benefit of police personnel, he said.

He demanded more recruitments in the police department and urged the state government to earmark more funds for the department. Referring to the frequent power-cuts in the state, he said there was no such problem during the AIADMK rule as the government had imported coal from foreign countries to facilitate electricity generation.

Thambithurai said the DMK government was now reacting vindictively towards officials involved in coal import. Officials were not interested in generating more electricity by exploring available resources.

He said the Central Government would extend help by supplying electricity to Tamil Nadu from the Central grid if the state governmentapproached it for help and explained the present power scenario in the state.

Referring to his reported remarks on the cases filed against AIADMK general secretary Jayalalitha, he said a Supreme Court Bench observed in its judgement that framing of false cases against Opposition parties by ruling parties were on the increase. He said he only expressed his views based on this judgement and added that he would not interfere with court verdicts, which would amount to contempt of court.

Dispelling the allegation that he had become the Law Minister without studying law, Thambithurai said several ministers in the past excelled in their respective ministries without having basic knowledge about their portfolios.
