Britain on Wednesday said it had closed its visa application centres in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) due to security concerns.
“The visa application centres (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Mirpur city of PoK) will be temporarily closed until further notice due to local security concerns,” said a statement from the British High Commission in Islamabad.
The statement gave no details about the security concerns. However, it is believed the closure was linked to the ‘long march’ launched by the lawyers’ movement to press for the reinstatement of judges deposed in 2007 by President Pervez Musharraf.
Thousands of lawyers and civil society activists will march from Lahore to Islamabad on Thursday. The Pakistan government has announced holidays in Islamabad on June 12 and 13.
