Professor Harkishan Singh was felicitated by the department of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, on the occasion of his 80th birthday on Wednesday. He is a professor emiretus in the department.
Singh had joined the university in 1964 as a reader. He played an instrumental role in the discovery of a neuromuscular junction blocking candocuronium drug, a rare achievement by a scientist at a university level. He has authored several books, published over hundred research papers, filed numerous patents and guided seventeen PhD students in his long and fruitful career.
Professor Singh who has received several awards including Golden Jubilee Commemoration award (1991), Eminent Pharmacist award (1998) and Panjab University Oration Award (1998) among others is currently involved in the writing of a book based on the history of pharmacy in India.
On the occasion, Professor Karan Vashisht, chairman of the department shared some memorable experiences of Singh’s long association with the department.
Several of his students including Professor K K Bhutani, Professor V K Kapoor and Dr R N Kaul, too went down the memory lane and recalled their experiences, highs and lows with Professor Singh.
Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Professor R C Sobti, presented a memento to Singh at the felicitation ceremony.
