Two people were shot dead in their sleep as the Howrah-Danapur Mail passed through Patna on Wednesday. Police suspect rivalry over a railway contract led to the murder of Anil and Vijay Yadav.

No eyewitness has turned up but the police believe they were shot while the train was between Bakthiarpur and Kusupur stations on Wednesday morning. Both were sleeping in the AC two-tier coach. The killers escaped. Somnath, a companion of the deceased, who was travelling in another coach, is in police custody.

Anil and Vijay were small-time contractors taking up painting jobs of bridges and stations. Both were residents of Danapur and were coming from Kolkata where they had gone on work related to the railway contracts. The duo was known was accused in an abduction case and are known to indulge in illegal activities.

Railway tenders, with huge sums of money at stake, are often a battleground for competing gangs in Bihar. Santosh, Vijay8217;s brother, accused Ritlal, a Danapur-based gangster for the murders. 8216;8216;Two months ago Ritlal had demanded Rs 50,000. Vijay refused to pay and he was beaten up,8217;8217; he said.

An FIR was filed by the GRP Patna junction, in connection with the killing. SP Railway Vijay Kumar said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
