A child born in the midst of death and destruction following the earthquake and a new-born who miraculously escaped the killer waves have been named ‘Tsunami’ by their parents.‘‘The doctor at the relief camp requested that I name the child Tsunami as he was born when the tsunami waves hit us but still survived the ordeal. I agreed to the name,’’ said Namita Roy, who gave birth to a boy in a forest in Port Blair on December 27, a day after the tsunami struck.Recounting the disaster, Namita said they lived in a village in Hut Bay in Andamans. When the earthquake hit on December 26, Namita who was expecting a baby ran for her life, helped by her husband Lakshmi Narayan, a contractor labourer. They reached a forested highland where she gave birth to a boy the next morning on December 27.For two days, the couple fought for life surrounded by some other villagers till they were rescued by a ship, INS Vishakapatnam, on December 29. They were brought over to Port Blair and admitted to the GB Pant Hospital. The mother and the baby had since recovered and were discharged from the hospital yesterday. They took shelter in a relief camp that was being run by private charity. It was there the baby was named Tsunami.Kutten and Priyanka of Kerala’s Alapuzha district also named their new-born baby girl Tsunami following her miraculous escape from the giant waves. — With PTI
