8226; Prime Minister Manmohan Singh8217;s comment 8220;the country must respect the SC court verdict with regard to Buta8217;s decision8221; is unfathomable. What does it mean? Instead of making ambiguous comments, Singh should remove Buta Singh with immediate effect. Instead of asking the country to 8216;respect8217; the SC verdict, the UPA government must respect the unambiguous verdict with immediate effect and get Buta Singh to step down. Is that so difficult?

8226; The Supreme Court verdict has not surprised anyone. However, the unconstitutionalism of the midnight fax aside, I would like to pose a question to TV journalists. What right do they have to refer to the governor of a state in a derogatory manner? 8216;Beimaan Buta8217;, 8216;Buta Per Batta8217; and other illogical references, were repeatedly resorted to. It should not be forgotten that the governor8217;s post is a constitutional one, and should be respected to that extent at least.

8226; Your editorial has rightly emphasised that Buta Singh8217;s action was a
8220;subversion of the Constitution8221; 8216;Our constitutional8217;, January 25. The Supreme Court verdict should help all parties reach a consensus to re-convert our governors from viceroys into guardians of the Constitution. Only then will India be safe as a democracy.

See it this way
8226; The Supreme Court judgment is a clear violation of the Lakshman Rekha the Constitution envisages between various institutions. The issue before the court was beyond its jurisdiction. The governor and president are the heads of state and central governments. It is implicit that they and only they will decide what constitutes a majority and whether a party or a formation will be able to provide a stable government. The Court has failed to appreciate that neither the NDA nor the UPA commanded majority support at that juncture, and only when the LJP was broken through inducements could the NDA manage a majority. How is it that the court is silent on the violation of people8217;s trust by defectors belonging to the LJP who got elected on an anti-NDA plank? Does the court want the governor to simply go by electoral/post-electoral maths? There were at least two honourable men who saw the folly in this case and rejected the appeal.

What a fall!
8226; I agree with Sandipan Deb 8216;Bow to the Left8217;, IE, January 24 on the sycophancy of Congressmen. If this wasn8217;t the case, a party that was in the forefront of the freedom struggle would not have lost its ideological moorings and had to look to the siblings in the Nehru-Gandhi family to eternally lead the country.

Who benefits?
8226; The state of healthcare facilities in India is pathetic 8216;India is seriously sick8217;, IE, January 25! The country has various schemes and programmes to improve general health, but nowhere in government documents are the actual beneficiaries of these schemes to be found!
