After Rajasthan, the VHP now plans to undertake trishul distribution programme in Chhattisgarh. This was announced by VHP international general secretary Pravin Togadia while attending the working committee meet here last week.
Togadia will launch the programme from Raipur on August 14. Bajrang Dal, VHP’s frontal body, proposes to distribute over five lakh trishuls to youths in the state in the next three months.
‘‘In the first phase we will distribute 5,000 trishuls at different functions. The VHP has endorsed our plan and assured us help,’’ says Deepak Dubey, state convernor of Bajrang Dal. The Bajrang Dal, he says, has started preparing the list of the people who will carry out the distribution.
Meanwhile, Togadia said any ban would by defied just as it was done in Rajasthan. ‘‘If Ajit Jogi is not willing to stop religious conversions, why should VHP not distribute trishuls,’’ he said.
But the Chief Minister, who himself has gone for soft-hinduvta organising by Virat Sri Ram Katha and inviting Shankaracharya Swraoopanand to his home, said: ‘‘The government is keeping a watch on VHP’s activities and will act appropriately.’’ He denied allegations of religious conversions but said the Congress is ready to face the BJP at any political fora on the issue. ‘‘The VHP will also be dealt firmly. It will not be allowed to vitiate peace in the state.”
