Suspended Trinamool Congress MP Ajit Panja today participated in a padayatra with WBPCC chief Pranab Mukherjee to canvas support for his daughter who has been fielded by Congress as its nominee for June 8 by-election to Vidyasagar Assembly constituency here.
‘‘The Congress’ doors are open for him. Panja was a senior leader of the Congress and was also a former Union Minister. He has some political issues to sort out and he will take his decision after considering them,’’ Mukherjee told reporters after campaigning with Panja for Mohua Mondal.
It is for the first time since he left Congress that Panja shared a common platform with state Congress leaders who included former state Congress chief Somen Mitra. ‘‘Vidyasagar falls in my North-East parliamentary constituency of Kolkata. Congress which has fielded my daughter as a candidate for the seat invited me to join the padayatra. I am happy at the response of the people and also involvement of Muktamancha (an organisation floated by Panja) with Congress through this event,’’ Panja said.
Asked if this would lead to his rejoining Congress, Panja said: ‘‘That position has not yet come. Neither Congress is discussing that nor the Muktamancha has thought about it.’’
