CHENNAI, March 27: Five villagers belonging to Gundupatti village who were arrested on Feb 27 in a case were granted bail by the Madras High Court on Thursday.

It may be recalled that the villagers were among others arrested on the basis of an alleged false complaint of assaulting a DMK functionary registered against them by the Kodaikanal police.

Delivering his orders on a petition filed by the five villagers — Raja, Jeevarathinam, Napoleon, Nagarajan and Ganesan, Justice A Ramamurthi said certain photographs have been produced to show that several persons had entered Gundupatti village and ransacked their belongings. Considering the fact that the petitioners are really sufferers of attack by anti-social elements and that the case has been entrusted to the CB-CID and now a judicial inquiry has been ordered by the Government, it is just and necessary that they should be released on bail.
