A detailed report on the project estimated to cost Rs 800 crore is being drafted by the civic corporation, Thane Commissioner T S Chandrashekhar told Express Newsline.

The Thane civic corporation held a meeting on the rail project on Tuesday. The meet was attended by J Chakravarthy, additional secretary in the Urban Development department, R K Jha of Maharashtra Road Development Corporation, Suhas Samant, TMC city engineer and Chandrashekhar.

quot;We propose to have a light railway transport in the city which will help decongest Thane and reduce the vehicular pollution drastically, quot; Chandrashekhar said. quot; The route will run on the periphery of the civic limits and cover all areas from Naupada, Ghodbunder road, Mumbra, Kausa and Diva and back, quot; he added.

According to him the German government has evinced keen interest in the project and has also offered financialassistance. However inviting global tenders will become necessary for the project, he said adding that the drafting of the project report may take two months.
