TISSA, Aug 6: The Tissa people have demanded immediate screening of the Muslim Gujjar nomads living in the vicinity of the Chamba border, uphill of the last police post of Mansa in Tissa area.

Angry over the suspected role of Gujjars and a few other Muslims in providing shelter and local intelligence to the Jammu and Kahsmir terrorists hiding in the Chamba-Doda boarder area, the locals have asked the government to reconsider the decision of allocating permanent pasture lands (five bighas each) to Gujjars near the border (away from last police post) to prevent them from being used by the terrorists as vehicles for execution of their nefarious plans.

“The tragedy (massacre of 35 people in the Tissa area) could have been avoided, had the Gujjars been kept under strict surveillance. The nomads from Jammu and Kashmir pitch their homes between the last police post and the border during summer months and their activities go unnoticed by the police since it is deployed about 15 kms away from the border in Chamba,” said some members of Bairagarh, Seikothi and Teesa panchayats.

They point out that the Gujjars had built permanent `kothas’ on the land allocated to them near the border, which could provide a safe haven to the militants during the period the Gujjars go down to the plains with their herds. “The government should view this possibility seriously and give them (Gujjars) land elsewhere, away from the border”, they demanded.
