Vijay singh and stuart appleby imposed a historic defeat on Tiger Woods while Geoff Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera took vital 18th-hole triumphs as the Internationals battled back at the Presidents Cup.

Singh and Appleby pounded world number one Woods and Jim Furyk 5 and 4 in four-ball play during day two of the team golf showdown, which ended with the Americans clinging to a 7-5 lead after being outscored 4 1/2-1 1/2 yesterday.

Woods suffered his most lopsided match-play loss as a professional in any format and his worst match-play defeat since age 16 when Tim Herron won 6 and 4 in round two of the 1992 US Amateur.

“Obviously we needed to make more birdies,” Woods said. “We were playing solidly. We just didn’t get enough looks at birdies on the same hole.” Fiji’s Singh and Australian Appleby were 11-under for 14 holes, combining for seven birdies and two eagles.
