MUMBAI, AUG 25: Gaurav Gadodia of Mumbai, the sole Indian representative at the World Junior under-21 chess championship for the blind and visually impaired, continued his winning run by defeating fourth seed S Barnowski of Poland at the Pottelberg Institute in Kortrijk, Belgium, according to information received today.
At the end of the third-round, Gadodia shares the lead with Hervaes Adrien of France, Devois Piet of Belgium and Subertova of the Czech Republic, all of whom have won their three rounds. Polnar Jesef and Vlach Karel, both of the Czech Republic, are in second spot with 2.5 points each.
Playing on the fourth board with white pieces, Gadodia, who is partially blind, went on the aggressive, which has become characteristic of him. In the Nd2 variation of French Defence, Gadodia won a piece in the 22nd move. With the advantage of having a rook and bishop vs rook and pawns in the end game, Gadodia managed to romp home and secure a full point after 53 moves.
The 18-year-old first year commercestudent of NM College Vile Parle, Gadodia has justified the confidence reposed in him by the All-India Chess Federation for the Blind AICFB, which is responsible for his visit.
Gadodia now takes on top seed Hervaes Adrien France in the fourth round. Charudatta Jadhav, secretary of AICFB who had played in the Senior World championship last year and had the opportunity of meeting Hervaes Adrien then, feels that this match will be a real test for Gadodia. Hervaes, who is not only blind but is also confined to the wheel chair, was the most popular participant and the most outgoing of that tournament, Jadhav said.
