Seventeen-Year-Old Armaan Ebrahim earned his third podium finish in the Formula BMW Asia Championship, finishing third in the penultimate round at the Shanghai circuit today.
Representing Team E-Rain, Armaan, who qualified second on the grid, was locked in a battle royale with four others that included Charlie-Ro Charlez (Malaysia), Michael Tony Patrizi (Australia), Salman Rashid Al-Khalifa, (Bahrain) and Robert Boughey (Thailand) in what he described ‘‘was the most eventful race so far,’’ in this 14-round series.
With all five swapping positions more than twice during the race, after leader and title winner Hamed Al Fardan led a start-to-finish charge, Armaan found adjusting to the car difficult. He, however, set the fastest lap of the race. His fellow BMW junior driver Charlez passed him with three laps to go. Both Charlez and Armaan finished 4.7s and 5.1s off Fardan’s time of 22:10.210s.
“It was a tight race and I did not want to do something rash, particularly when I stood with a good chance of finishing third in the Rookie Cup,” he told The Sunday Express.
The 12 points earned by Armaan boosted his Driver Classification tally to 114 and he now occupies fifth place. However, in the Rookie Cup, Armaan who was second to Charlez, took his tally to 149 points behind Michael Patrizi and Charlez.
Round 14 of the championship is scheduled for Sunday before the Formula One Championship. Armaan who starts on pole could finish fourth overall, but in the Rookie standings would remain third.
