•May 28 will see the first session of the Constituent Assembly at Kathmandu in Nepal, which is expected to declare the mountain country to be a republic, ending the reign of King Gyanendra and the 240-year-old monarchy. Maoist leader Prachanda has already asked the King to make a ‘graceful exit’ by May 27.
• May 26 is the Independence Day of Georgia, marking its establishment as an independent state in 1918, which was later crushed by Bolshevik invasion in 1921.
• On 29 May, the International Compact Conference is expected to take place in Stockholm. It will be the first follow-up meeting after the launch of a five-year peace and development plan in the Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh in May 2007. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Iraqi Prime Minister Nur al-Maliki, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are expected to attend.
• On June 1, Parliamentary elections will be held in Macedonia.
• The Democrat face-off between Barack Obama (almost there) and Hillary Clinton continues, with the remaining primaries due in Puerto Rico on June 1 and in Montana and South Dakota on June 3.
• On May 27, the Majlis (the Iranian parliament) will convene its first session after elections were held on 14 March and 25 April.
• From May 27 to 30, the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will be visiting China, meeting counterpart Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao for talks on bilateral cooperation and regional peace and stability.
• On May 28, French President Nicolas Sarkozy will visit Poland and meet President Lech Kaczynski as well as Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Sarkozy and Kaczynski are expected to sign a joint declaration on French-Polish strategic partnership.
