July 14: With a view to strengthen the team of government pleaders and public prosecutors at the Thane courts, the state government has appointed five new government pleaders. With this move, the number of government pleaders has gone up to fourteen.

It may be recalled that after the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance government took over the reins of power, there was uncertainty for several months and the work of government pleaders had come to a grinding halt.

The then District Government pleader P V Patil stepped down and did not wait for his resignation to be accepted. His place was then taken by a senior member in the panel, H C Bhatia.

However, the state government then appointed Vijay Sali as the new District Government pleader in his place. Presently, Sali and his team are managing the affairs of the public prosecutor and district government pleaders.

With a view to strengthen their functioning, the government has added two more pleaders to the existing panel of twelve and filled up the vacant posts in place of those who had refused to join.

In the restructured panel, P B Bhosale, who was appointed the government pleader did not take charge at all, and his place remained vacant throughout till a new person was appointed in his place.

Through the latest appointment, the government has also taken care to ensure that the work at the Kalyan court does not suffer. Formerly, one of the members of the panel had to visit Kalyan in turns, which led to many problems.

The new members appointed to the panel are Hemlata A Deshmukh, C B Deshpande, Jayshree Narsinha, S M Panse and Dilip V Dongre. Panse and Dongre have been appointed exclusively for the Kalyan courts, the order states. While four of the new appointees have taken charge, Jayshree Narsinha is yet to assume charge.

In a related development, even before the appointment of the five new persons, two of the existing members of the panel, namely Ramesh Chavanke and Deepak Salvi, stepped down from the panel for reasons best known to them.
