Thane’s ex-Mayor and former Shiv Sena leader Vijaya Deshmukh was arrested today for allegedly taking money from people with a promise to provide them jobs, police said.
Deshmukh was produced before a first class judicial magistrate who remanded her to police custody till July 8.
According to a complaint lodged with the Waghle Industrial Estate police station, Deshmukh had allegedly taken money from several unemployed people with a promise to provide them jobs in the Thane Municipal Corporation during her tenure as Mayor between March 1997 and 1998.
She is alleged to have cheated more than 24 people to the tune of Rs 4 lakh and a case of cheating was registered against her in 2002.
However, as the case was being investigated, Deshmukh approached the sessions court and Bombay High Court for anticipatory bail. The high court stayed her arrest between June 17 and 24 and directed her to co-operate with the police in the investigations.
As there was no cooperation forthcoming, on the expiry of the HC stay, the police arrested her.
It may be recalled that Deshmukh had also been arrested 20 months ago after it was found that she had taken money from several persons during her tenure as Mayor under the pretext of providing water connection.
Deshmukh, who was denied a Shiv Sena ticket in the 1999 civic elections, resigned from the party and joined the NCP. Currently, she is not affiliated to any party.
